Here at The School of St Jude, we feel that sharing the benefits of education is an important part our mission, which aims to fight poverty through education and develop the future leaders of Tanzania. In 2015, we saw our first class graduate from Form 6, and since then we have seen two more cohorts follow suit! This in itself is a remarkable achievement as less than 2 per cent of children in Tanzania graduate from Form 6.  In 2015 we also introduced a Community Service Year internship for our graduating students. The program was created as a way for our students to give back to their own communities in thanks for their free education. This program is completely optional and our graduates are under no obligation to participate.

What is ‘Beyond St Jude’s?

The first year out of school, for those who choose to participate, can be spent giving back to the local community; this is followed by higher education. Both the Community Service Year and the Tertiary Program are run by the Beyond St Jude’s team at The School of St Jude.

What’s involved in the Community Service Year and when does it run?

We offer our interns the option of either nominating to teach in their local government school or to work at St Jude’s in various departments. With a shortage of over 47,000 teachers across government schools in northern Tanzania, there is a huge need to support the education system within our region and our interns truly help fill that gap. Placements at St Jude’s, see our graduates become strong role models that our students can relate to. The Community Service Year runs from July to June.

What are the benefits of the Community Service Year?

Even as a new program we can already see the ripple effect that our graduates are having on their community. Over 10,000 students in Arusha have now been taught by our interns! Many of these students would otherwise have been without teachers in the disciplines of Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology.

The graduates who are teaching in government schools have been met with huge challenges—the schools are woefully underfunded and under-resourced, and our graduates are teaching classes of up to 130 students! The heads of schools have reported that students’ attendance is higher, their grades have improved, and they are enjoying school more as a result of the St Jude’s graduates. Likewise, the interns working at St Jude’s are also proving to be real assets to the St Jude’s team as role models for the students.

Not only is the Community Service Year bringing a new standard of education to government school students, but our interns are finding that it has given them valuable life skills that will set them apart from others when applying for university and then later in their professional career!

So what happens after the Community Service Year?

After their Community Service Year, it’s time to go off to do their higher education! The majority of our students would like to go on to continue studying and our tertiary program is in place to help our graduates achieve their dreams of completing their higher education. Our scholars are now pursuing a wide variety of degrees since completing their community service, ranging from Medicine to Agriculture. While the most popular choices are Medicine, Engineering and Actuarial Science, some other degrees our scholars are undertaking include Accounting, Banking, Business Management, Economics, Education, Financial Management, International Relations Information Technology and Telecommunications.
