Sponsoring

Sponsoring a student here at St Jude’s contributes towards their educational costs - providing textbooks, stationery, school uniforms, transport to and from school, hot nutritious lunches, as well as maintaining school resources such as our computer and science labs, libraries, and playgrounds.

Then once your sponsored student starts boarding (in Grade 5), or if they are already boarding, your sponsorship will also go towards the cost of their boarding experience - providing them with a safe, clean place to live and study, as well as supervising boarding parents and educational support.

A Sole Sponsorship covers the full cost of a St Jude’s scholarship, meaning you are the only sponsor of your St Jude’s student.

A Co-Sponsorship covers half the cost of a St Jude’s scholarship and a Shared Sponsorship covers part of the cost.

You are more than welcome to send us a message for your sponsored student(s) via our email address sponsor@schoolofstjude.co.tz

Any letters we receive in this way will be printed off and given to your sponsored student. Our students love hearing from their sponsors! Please be aware that due to our students’ busy timetables here at school, your sponsored student will not always get the chance to reply right away.

Our students will have the opportunity to write to you once a term, but we as the Sponsor Relations Team will also be in contact with any news and updates concerning their progress here at school. If you have any further questions please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Gifts in the Post:

The gift of a high quality education is already the greatest gift of all for our students. If, however, you would like to also send your sponsored student(s) gifts, we happily receive them here at the School.

Appropriate gifts may include anything that may help your sponsored student in their studies such as a new school backpack or pencil case. Novels and story books, sports equipment and games, stickers and colored pens, are all advised gifts which would be appreciated by our students.

St Jude’s Gift Packs:

Student gift packs are a fast and easy way to provide your sponsored student with an appropriate gift without the hassle of postage charges or delays. Your purchase will also help support the local business in the community. Our gift packs are available to purchase online through our website here.

When purchasing simply add a comment that the student pack is for your particular sponsored student.

We love visitors! You are more than welcome to come and visit us here at The School of St Jude. We have a Visitors Team who can advise you when is the best time to come and help make your stay memorable for all involved. If you would like to visit us please just get in contact on visitor@schoolofstjude.co.tz.

You will get the chance to see the running of the school with full tours of all our campuses, and of course most importantly, you will have the opportunity to spend time with your sponsored student. As a sponsor you can also visit your student’s home and meet their family. Accommodation is provided at school and is free for sponsors.

We ask sponsors to commit to a minimum of three years of sponsorship. This is to ensure stability for our students as well as our school.

As a sponsor you can communicate with your sponsored student as often or as little as you would like.

You are permitted to communicate with your sponsored student through our official school channel, the Sponsor Relations Team ONLY. As a sponsor you may not exchange personal contact information with your sponsored student. We ask that you do not accept or extend social media invitations or befriend any student or staff member and do not offer money directly to a sponsored student or their family member. If your sponsored student attempts to contact you through a channel other than the Sponsor Relations Team please contact us.

If you have further questions about sponsor expectations please email us.

As a sponsor you will receive a detailed profile full of information about your sponsored student when you sign up. Additionally, you will receive regular updates regarding your student throughout their journey at St Jude’s. Each year, you will also receive your student’s annual school photo, school reports, three letters from your sponsored student, as well as notifications on special achievements they may attain throughout the year.

At St Jude’s our academic year runs from January to December. In the Tanzanian National Curriculum there is required standardized testing at Grade 4, Grade 7, Form 2 and Form 4. Students must pass these tests to continue onto the next year of their education here at St Jude’s. We have three school campuses. Our Sisia Campus, located in Moshono, a bustling lush area on the outskirts of Arusha, is home to both our Lower Primary students (Grade 1-4) and Upper Primary students (Grade 5-7). A ten minute walk from our Sisia Campus is the Moivaro Boarding Campus, home to our Upper Primary students (Grade 5-7) who board during the week. Our third campus, the Smith Secondary Campus, is located about 45 km outside of Arusha in Usa River. Situated at the base of Mount Meru, this campus is both the school and boarding campus for our students from Form 1-6.

Our students begin to board in Grade 5. They continue to board straight through to their last year here at St Jude’s, Form 6.

Donating

Yes, we accept gifts in kind. Please see our wish list for our guidelines and needed items.

If you’re making a visit and have room, please pack them in your luggage.

Please remember that parcels sent by airmail can take up to four months to arrive (sea mail is even longer — often 12+ months!), so don’t worry if it takes some time for us to let you know the parcel has arrived. We will email you when it does.

These points are guidelines and are not guaranteed to eliminate additional charges; each postal worker applies them differently.

  • Please do not register or insure any mail as the school incurs collection taxes upon arrival
  • Mark all parcels as “second-hand goods” or “personal gifts”
  • Ensure the description of goods written on the parcel matches the actual items inside, as customs and postal staff frequently inspect contents of parcels
  • Please put the value of the package at no more than USD $10 (the lower the better)
  • Ensure that your parcel is LESS THAN 2KG. We have been advised that parcels less than 2KG are technically tax-free regardless of content, but this is not guaranteed by all postal workers

Tax-free items

  • Books
  • Personal goods
  • Anything that is not new; please remove labels and packaging from all items before sending them

We have a standard letter explaining that St Jude’s is a charity and we request that the excess baggage fees be waived for you. Please contact our Donor Relations Team and provide your name and travel dates so we can email a personalised letter to you. You can then forward it on to your airline.

As much as we appreciate your generosity and offer to help even more, we have decided not to allow monetary or goods contributions to the families or the community. Along the same lines, sponsors are not allowed to contribute money towards other expenses the family may have such as medical care, housing, market bills, etc.

It is not feasible for the school to become involved with our students’ families and the community beyond educating our students. Expanding into community and family assistance would put us at risk of straying away from our mission statement and stretching the resources of the school beyond its limit. We have to enforce the policy “education assistance only” for our students.

The school feels that the long-term solution of Fighting Poverty through Education is the one we must concentrate on so that our available resources are used effectively and sustainably.
