Teacher-Librarians

LOCATION: Arusha, Tanzania
Opened in 2002 with three students, The School of St Jude now has nearly 1,500 students from Grades 1-6 in primary and Forms 1-3 in secondary. The school is introducing student-centred curricula conducive to lasting and meaningful student learning. At the commencement of 2011, The International Primary Curriculum (IPC) was implemented in the primary schools. This change process is designed to be approached in several phases over 2–3 years. To this end, the school seeks applicants from interested and qualified Teacher-Librarians.
Key Responsibilities:
- Management of either the Moshono Lower Primary Library (Grade 1-3), Moshono Upper Primary Library (Grade 4-6) or the Usa River Library (Secondary) and library staff.
- Provide information and library services to the school community.
- Liaison with staff in providing a dynamic and innovative library.
- Provision of lessons for students as appropriate.
- To initiate and develop the use of the library, fostering a positive and caring environment for students.
- To engage in activities which improve the literacy levels, research skills and positive attitudes toward library usage by staff and students.
- To oversee the allocation and cataloguing of library and teacher resources received and purchased by the school (including all textbooks!).
Required Qualifications and Experience:
- Possess a recognized Teacher Librarian qualification, Bachelor or Masters degree, or equivalent combination of teaching and librarianship qualifications.
- Have recent successful experience in teacher/librarianship.
- Be conversant in using an automated library system (Libcode currently in use).
- Experience in cataloguing and use of the Dewey Decimal system.

- Have empathy with, and an understanding of, children in a developing world school in Tanzania
- Ability to model good practice in all aspects of teaching and information skills
- Ability to be a co-operative team member in a multi-facetted organization
- Possess the integrity, open-mindedness and adaptability necessary to live and work in a developing country and face the challenges this presents
- Strong inter-personal and communication skills.
Stipend:
