Teacher Mentors With Cambridge Curriculum Experience (Maths/Science and Computer Technology)

The School of St Jude is a sponsorship-supported English medium school in Arusha providing free, high-quality education to primarily the disadvantaged and orphaned children from the lowest socio-economic backgrounds in the area.

The school is introducing student-centred curricula conducive to lasting and meaningful student learning. The International Primary Curriculum (IPC) will be implemented in the primary school and the Cambridge IGCSE in the secondary school. This change process is designed to be approached in several phases over 2 – 3 years.

To this end, the school seeks applications from interested and qualified teachers for the positions of:

Secondary Teacher Mentor

We are looking for a person who:

  • Is familiar with the Cambridge secondary curriculum (IGCSE) as a teacher.
  • Can provide ongoing professional development in teacher methodology and best practise in student-centred classrooms.
  • Can provide individualised and subject specific and as well as general mentoring on a day-to-day basis with relation to classroom work, assessment and course work.
  • Can train and guide our teachers in effective use of text books as a guide to learning and a teacher resource.

Primary & Secondary Information & Computer Technology (ICT) Teacher Mentor

We are looking for a person who:

  • Can train and guide our teachers in how best to integrate technology to their daily teaching practices and connect with the classroom work of the IPC and Cambridge curricula
  • Can train and guide our teachers in how to teach web design using www.bluevoda.com web design software.
  • bring teaching resources like software...web designing software, video tutorials of office 2007/2010 etc.
  • Is prepared to face challenges like internet timing out etc.

In addition to these specific skills, the successful candidates for these positions will be those who possess the following qualifications and experience:

  • Bachelor of Education or equivalent from an accredited university
  • At least 10 years of classroom teaching experience in student-centred classrooms in more than one curriculum framework for children aged 5 - 18 years
  • An ability to lead a team of local teachers and collaborate with the Curriculum Co-ordinator
  • Experience with and interest in curriculum writing, development and implementation
  • An ability to demonstrate and work with patience, flexibly, reflection, independence and with a focus on on-going teacher education to promote quality student learning.

Successful applicants will have the privilege of being involved as leaders of change in an exciting and developing school environment. Their daily work will involve them as mentors for Tanzanian teachers who are facing the challenge of changing to the international curricula. In addition, they will need to possess the integrity, open-mindedness and adaptability necessary to live and work in a developing country and face the challenges this presents.

  • Remuneration for these positions will be a volunteer stipend (enough to live on but not enough on which to travel around Africa) and accommodation at the school.
