Initial steps
Once you’ve considered your loved ones, the charities you’d like to support and who you’d like to appoint as your executor, we recommend that you appoint a solicitor or trustee to write your Will.
This is the best way to ensure that your intentions will be upheld and that your estate will be distributed correctly.
In Australia, if you do not have a solicitor, the Law Society or Institute in your State or Territory can refer you to one in your area.
• A residual gift: This is the simplest and most effective way to support St Jude’s work into the future. After providing for your loved ones and paying all debts, you can leave the remainder of your estate (or a percentage of the remainder) to The School of St Jude. This type of gift has the advantage of guarding against the effects of inflation.
• A cash gift: You can leave a specified monetary amount, but please remember that, over time, the real value of a cash gift may reduce because of inflation.
• Specific assets: You can leave property such as real estate, shares or anything of value. The School of St Jude can also be the sole beneficiary of a life insurance policy.
When planning your gift, we encourage you to discuss your intentions with your family.
Once you have decided on the type of gift you’d like to make, ask your solicitor to draft the appropriate clause. The following wording may be taken as a guide:
A gift that supports St Jude’s general purposes gives our school the flexibility to respond to the greatest need at the time of your gift. However, if you would like to direct your gift to a specific purpose, please contact us first so that we can ensure that your wishes can be fulfilled and that your gift will have the impact you intend.
If you would like to talk further with someone about including a gift in your Will to St Jude’s, or to let us know that you have already done so, please contact the Chairperson of The School of St Jude charity board in Australia, Mark Cubit, via info@schoolofstjude.co.tz
Or get in touch with us via our online form below and a member of our team will send you our Gifts in Will Guide.
We would be pleased to arrange a phone call with you for a confidential discussion about your wishes.
Sue has been part of the St Jude's community since 2007, supporting the school as both a donor and student sponsor. After almost two decades of supporting St Jude's, she has chosen to extend that support to future generations by including a gift in her Will.
“I heard about Gemma and the school many years ago and really liked the idea of fighting poverty through education. I started out just with regular donations, but as I learnt more about the school, I decided to commit to being a sponsor.
Many people my age have been lucky enough to benefit from many years of economic prosperity, and many of us will die with a significant estate. If everyone like that left even a relatively small portion of their estate to one or more charities, it could make a tremendous difference.
A donation to a charity like St Jude’s would seem to me to have an ongoing lasting effect in helping to bring children, and indirectly their families, out of poverty. That’s a wonderful legacy."
We understand that making your Will is a very personal matter and we will respect your confidentiality at all times. But if you have already included The School of St Jude in your Will, or are considering doing so, please do let us know so that we can thank you properly.
Letting St Jude’s know of your intentions not only helps us to plan for the future with more confidence but also gives you the opportunity to discuss any particular wishes or concerns you may have about your gift.
We would be delighted to speak with you personally, to tell you more about our future vision and to talk through your gift ideas.
The School of St Jude is endorsed by the Australian Tax Office as a charitable organisation and Deductible Gift Recipient. Bequests of property (including real estate and shares) to St Jude’s may be exempt from Capital Gains Tax.
When you include The School of St Jude in your Will, you join a very special group of generous supporters who share our vision of fighting poverty through education.
Your gift will continue to make a difference to the lives of Tanzanian students, young people and their families for many, many years to come. Thank you for your foresight and generosity!
