It’s one thing to benefit from an opportunity. It’s another to stand in front of the people who made it possible and show them, clearly and honestly, that it worked.
In February this year, St Jude’s alum Faith found herself in that exact position. She travelled to Australia alongside Gemma for a fundraising tour, accompanied by St Jude’s staff member, Johnson. It was an experience that connected Faith’s personal journey to the broader story of the school.
Before this trip, Faith had completed Form 6 and gone on to graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. She later participated in St Jude’s Next Frontier Incubator and Small Grants Program, where she received a Kicker Grant that supported her first steps in business after university. Each experience contributed to her growth and helped prepare her to represent St Jude’s alumni on an international stage.
Speaking about her experience, Faith shared that at first, it felt almost unreal. “I felt an overwhelming sense of excitement and gratitude,” Faith says. “I couldn’t believe I would have the chance to meet the very people who have supported my education for so many years.” But as the tour progressed, that excitement settled into awareness. Travelling between cities, meeting supporters and stepping into new environments gave her a clearer sense of what this opportunity really represented.
Part of that shift came from what she observed. Meeting donors and interacting with professionals exposed her to a work culture built on consistency, discipline and focus. It wasn’t about big, visible moments of success, but about showing up every day and doing the work. That perspective stayed with her. “It made me realise that every successful person starts somewhere, and through consistency and hard work, they achieve their goals.”
At the same time, her role on the trip became clearer. Representing St Jude’s was not about delivering a perfect message, but about being a genuine example of the school’s impact. Having completed the full scholarship journey, Faith carried a story that didn’t need to be polished. It was already complete. “I wasn’t just telling a story. I was living proof of what donor support can achieve.” That authenticity helped supporters connect with her story, especially those who had never visited Tanzania but had supported the mission from afar.
Through these interactions, she gained a deeper understanding of what inspires people to give. People are motivated not only by the desire to help but by seeing the results of their support. Meeting someone whose life has been changed by their contribution makes the impact tangible.
At the core of it all, guiding and supporting Faith, was Gemma. Throughout the tour, her approach stood out naturally. She spoke openly about the school, sharing both its achievements and challenges with honesty. That transparency helped build trust, but it was her dedication that left the strongest impression on Faith. Over five weeks, she delivered more than 100 presentations while maintaining the same energy and clarity throughout.
For Faith, Gemma’s leadership and commitment in action left a mark. Watching that dedication firsthand gave her a deeper appreciation for the work behind the school’s success. It also strengthened her respect for Gemma and the consistency required to sustain opportunities for students. From that experience, one lesson stood out: “Never give up on your dreams, even when others doubt you.”
By the end of the trip, the experience had changed how Faith viewed her place within the St Jude’s community. Being an alum comes with the responsibility of giving back. She said, “Being an alum is not just about what I have received, but also about how I give back.” For Faith, that means staying connected, creating impact and carrying forward the values that shaped her.
Looking at the journey as a whole, from her first day at St Jude’s to representing the school internationally, the impact of donor support becomes clear. It is not an abstract concept, but rather something reflected in real opportunities and real lives. As Faith puts it, “I am standing here today because of people who chose to give.”
Her experience is a reminder that behind every opportunity is sustained effort from donors, the school and individuals like Gemma who continue to push the mission forward. For fellow alumni, the message is straightforward: stay connected, stay involved and recognise the role you now play in continuing that impact. Because stories like Faith’s don’t just reflect where St Jude’s has been, they help shape where it is going.
