It was a Thursday morning in March when an email popped into the Alumni team’s inbox. As one team member read it aloud, smiles quickly followed. Two alumni engineers, Albert and Benjamin, class of ’17 had reached out with a special request; they wanted to return to St Jude’s and spend their short holiday break giving back and bringing their expertise in electrical engineering to assess and improve the school’s electrical systems.
Over the following days, Albert and Benjamin led a comprehensive power audit across all three St Jude’s campuses. They examined every corner of the electrical infrastructure, identified potential energy-draining systems, and studied power consumption patterns with laser focus. “We discovered areas contributing to high energy bills and offered solutions to improve both efficiency and reliability,” they shared.
“The report we compiled included practical fixes for now, and visionary strategies for the future. It felt good knowing our work could drive real, lasting change,” Benjamin added.

Their efforts addressed some of the school’s most pressing challenges, particularly optimising energy usage at the Moivaro Boarding Campus, Sisia and Smith campuses. But what surprised them the most wasn’t the technical wins. It was the emotional ones. “Seeing my former teachers again, and hearing how proud they were, that’s a memory I’ll carry forever,” said Benjamin.
“Volunteering taught me that giving back doesn’t have to be about money. Your knowledge and time are gifts that can transform a place,” says Albert.
As their time at St Jude’s came to an end, Benjamin and Albert took a moment to reflect on the familiar grounds that had shaped them into who they are today. “There’s never a perfect time to give back, just start,” Benjamin said. “You’ll be amazed at how far your help can go.” Albert nodded in agreement, adding, “Volunteering lets you use your skills to make a real impact. There’s a unique joy in solving problems and gaining experience that not only helps others but also boosts your career.”
