Leave a legacy draft

Leave a legacy that breaks the cycle of poverty

With a gift in your Will to St Jude’s, you can create a legacy to help us continue providing free, quality education to generations of future leaders. This means supporting current students and those who start their educational journey at St Jude’s in the future.

We are incredibly grateful for the generosity of people who consider our mission to fight poverty through education when creating their Wills.

Your gift, no matter how large or small, will make a difference

As a volunteer and long-term sponsor of students at The School of St Jude, Australian Board Director and Treasurer, David Collins (pictured right, and above with his wife Gail), knows the value of gifts in Wills and the impact they’ve had for the school and its students.

He says bequests mean the school can invest in buildings and equipment required for development and growth, and they help support the school’s financial sustainability.

“My wife and I are fortunate to have visited the school and seen firsthand the impact bequests have for St Jude’s. Bequests are another way of giving, and mean the school can sustainably provide free quality education for students who would otherwise miss out on educational opportunities that significantly impact their life, their family’s life and the broader community.

We are leaving a gift in our Will as an enduring legacy that continues to provide support for the education of our 2 students even after we have gone,” he says.

How to leave a gift in your Will

Initial steps

Once you’ve considered your loved ones, the charities you’d like to support and who you’d like to appoint as your executor, we recommend that you appoint a solicitor or trustee to write your Will.

This is the best way to ensure that your intentions will be upheld and that your estate will be distributed correctly.

In Australia, if you do not have a solicitor, the Law Society or Institute in your State or Territory can refer you to one in your area.

Your gift, your choice

It’s easy to include The School of St Jude in your Will. You can choose how you would like to leave your gift, including:

•  A residual gift: This is the simplest and most effective way to support St Jude’s work into the future. After providing for your loved ones and paying all debts, you can leave the remainder of your estate (or a percentage of the remainder) to The School of St Jude. This type of gift has the advantage of guarding against the effects of inflation.

•  A cash gift: You can leave a specified monetary amount, but please remember that, over time, the real value of a cash gift may reduce because of inflation.

•  Specific assets: You can leave property such as real estate, shares or anything of value. The School of St Jude can also be the sole beneficiary of a life insurance policy.

When planning your gift, we encourage you to discuss your intentions with your family.

Once you have decided on the type of gift you’d like to make, ask your solicitor to draft the appropriate clause. The following wording may be taken as a guide:

I give [my residuary estate/percentage of my residuary estate OR cash amount OR specified assets] to The School of St Jude Limited (ABN 53 620 147 775) for the general purposes of The School of St Jude, Tanzania, and I direct that the receipt of the treasurer or other proper officer shall be a complete discharge to my executors.

A gift that supports St Jude’s general purposes gives our school the flexibility to respond to the greatest need at the time of your gift. However, if you would like to direct your gift to a specific purpose, please contact us first so that we can ensure that your wishes can be fulfilled and that your gift will have the impact you intend.
